A guide to growing thyme seeds

Step 1: Preparing the soil or pot

  • Choose a pot with drainage holes or a garden area with light, well-drained soil.
  • Thyme likes slightly sandy, dry soil, so you can mix a little sand or perlite with the soil.

Step 2: Sowing

  • Scatter the seeds on the surface of the soil at intervals of 2-3 cm.
  • Gently press the seeds into the soil but do not cover with thick soil – thyme seeds need light to germinate.
  • Water gently using a spritzer so as not to move the seeds.

Step 3: Growing Conditions

  • Thyme likes full sun , at least 6 hours a day.
  • Ideal growing temperature: 15-25°C.
  • Moderate watering – the soil should be moist but not too wet, thyme is sensitive to excess water.

Stage 4: Germination and growth

  • The seeds will germinate within 14-28 days, so be patient.
  • When the seedlings reach a height of 5-7 cm, they can be thinned and a distance of 15 cm can be maintained between the plants.

Step 5: Maintenance and Harvesting

  • Water sparingly, only when the soil is dry.
  • Once the plant reaches a height of 10-15 cm, you can begin to gently harvest branches.
  • Gentle pruning encourages branched and lush growth.
  • Thyme is a perennial, and if cared for properly, it will continue to grow for years.
