A guide to growing spinach seeds

Step 1: Preparing the soil or pot

  • Choose a deep pot with good drainage or a garden area with rich, aerated, and well-drained soil.
  • Mix compost with the soil to improve fertility and support rapid growth.

Step 2: Sowing

  • The seeds can be soaked in lukewarm water for 12-24 hours before sowing to speed up germination.
  • Scatter the seeds in rows, with 5-10 cm spacing between each seed.
  • Cover with a thin layer of soil (about 1-2 cm).
  • Water gently to maintain moisture.

Step 3: Growing Conditions

  • Spinach prefers full sun but can also grow in partial shade.
  • Ideal growing temperature: 10-20°C (high heat may cause the plant to flower quickly).
  • Regular watering is important for keeping leaves soft and juicy.

Stage 4: Germination and growth

  • The seeds will germinate within 7-14 days.
  • When the seedlings reach a height of 5-7 cm, they can be thinned out, leaving a space of 10-15 cm between the plants.

Step 5: Maintenance and Harvesting

  • Regular but not excessive watering – spinach is sensitive to excess water.
  • A gentle organic fertilizer every two weeks will help with healthy growth.
  • You can start harvesting outer leaves when the plant reaches a height of 10-15 cm.
  • Regular picking encourages further growth and prevents premature flowering.
